Our commitment
A pay calculator that only some people can use is a pay calculator that has failed. This site is built to be usable with a keyboard alone, with a screen reader, at large text sizes, and on a slow connection.
What is built in
- It works without JavaScript. Every calculator is an ordinary HTML form that submits to the server. Nothing on this site depends on scripting, so nothing breaks if scripting is blocked, fails or times out.
- Every control has a real label. Form fields use proper
<label>elements, so a screen reader announces what each box is for, and tapping the label focuses the field. - Keyboard only. You can reach every link, field and button with Tab, and a visible focus outline shows where you are. A skip link at the top jumps straight past the navigation.
- Colour is never the only signal. Charts and tables label their values in text as well as colour, and the palette was checked for the common forms of colour blindness.
- Text contrast meets WCAG 2.2 AA against its background.
- It resizes. Text scales to 200% and the layout reflows to a single column without anything being cut off or needing sideways scrolling.
- Headings are in order. One H1 per page, then H2 and H3 in a proper nesting, so screen reader users can navigate by heading.
- Motion. There is no autoplay, no carousel and no animation that starts on its own.
Known limits
We have tested this site with keyboard-only navigation and at 200% text size, and fixed what we found. We have not yet carried out a full audit with a screen reader. If anything here gets in your way, tell us — see below — and we will treat it as a bug, not a footnote.
