Role Overview

HMP Bristol is seeking committed Prison Officers to help maintain safety, security, and order within the establishment. Prison Officers are central to prison life, managing daily routines while building constructive relationships that encourage positive behaviour and rehabilitation.

This role is well suited to individuals who are resilient, fair, and motivated to make a meaningful difference in a challenging yet rewarding public service role.

Key Responsibilities as Prison Officer

  • Maintain the safety and security of prisoners, staff, and visitors

  • Supervise prisoners during daily activities, movements, and routines

  • Build professional, respectful relationships to promote positive behaviour

  • Manage incidents, conflict, and risk situations calmly and effectively

  • Support rehabilitation, wellbeing, and resettlement initiatives

  • Conduct security checks, searches, and observations

  • Maintain accurate records and follow operational procedures

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to uphold a safe environment

Skills & Experience Required

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to remain calm, firm, and professional under pressure

  • Good judgement, integrity, and resilience

  • Team-focused approach with a strong sense of responsibility

  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and respect

  • No previous prison experience required – full training provided

Shift Pattern & Pay

  • Full-time position with shift work, including nights, weekends, and public holidays
