Role Overview
As an Apprentice Train Manager, you’ll lead our on-board teams to ensure an exceptional customer experience while maintaining the safe and punctual operation of our services. It’s a high-profile, rewarding role for someone who thrives in a fast-moving, customer-facing environment and is ready to take ownership.
You’ll receive full training, earn while you learn, and develop leadership and safety-critical skills essential to rail operations. From dispatching trains and supporting the driver during disruption to coaching your team and checking tickets, you’ll be at the forefront of delivering our core customer and safety values.
This apprenticeship combines hands-on responsibility with formal learning, making it the perfect launchpad for a long-term career in rail.
Key Responsibilities as an Apprentice Train Manager
- Lead and coach on-board teams to deliver a safe, clean, and welcoming journey
- Carry out safety-critical tasks, including train dispatch and door operation
- Support customers with information, ticket sales, and onboard assistance
- Promote and manage revenue through effective ticket checks and customer service
- Communicate with drivers and colleagues during disruptions to provide timely updates
- Uphold LNER’s safety, service, and revenue standards at all times
Skills & Experience Required
- Strong passion for customer service and excellent interpersonal skills
- Confident leadership and the ability to motivate teams
- Ability to stay calm and professional under pressure
- Flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and stay away from home during training
- Aged 18 or over (due to alcohol sales responsibilities)
- GCSE Grade 9–4 (or equivalent) in English & Maths if you’re aged 18
- If aged 19+, no specific grade is required, but prior evidence may be requested
- Willingness to complete all required assessments and apprenticeship learning
Important Dates:
- Start full-time training on Monday, 29th September (6 weeks, Mon–Fri, no absences)
- Complete psychometric testing on Monday, 4th August
- Attend interviews W/C 11th August
- Attend medical assessments W/C 18th Augus
Note: If you already hold a Level 2 Passenger Transport Operative qualification, or are currently working toward one, you are not eligible for this apprenticeship.
Shift Pattern & Pay
- Starting salary: £43,000+
- Increases to £44,940 on completion of qualifications
- Final salary on full competency: £48,788
- Full-time, shift-based working pattern
- Includes weekend and early/late shifts

Additional Requirements
- Must pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
- Must pass a medical assessment including drug and alcohol screening
- Must complete English and Maths assessments as part of enrolment
- Participation in industry-standard psychometric testing required
